The play and the parts

Post by Emily on Thu May 15, 2008 10:16 pm

Dear actors,

First, I want to thank the people that have come to theater regularly. Also, thank you to the people who focus during class and give this project complete attention.

Second, some actors told me that they think the parts in this play are unequal: some parts have lots of lines, while others have only a few. Also, these actors said that their ideas from the brainstorm were not written into the script.

It is important to me that everyone be represented in this project. That is why I tried very hard to make the writing process democratic. I wanted everyone to work together and to have a voice. To remind you:

1) We had a brainstorm so that EVERYONE could give his/her ideas.

2) We used one theater class to read the script (the first 3 scenes). I asked each of you to write an idea for what you wanted to happen next (in scene 4). No one did this. I didn’t receive one idea.

3) I said, “Let’s have auditions to see who gets what part.” I was told, “No, everyone likes his/her part. We don’t need them.” NO ONE disagreed.

So, in my opinion, I have provided many chances for each person to express his/her ideas and to have his/her voice heard.

It is very late in the writing process to change things. BUT, I will say that we still have some options to fix this situation.

1) I’ll take the script and re-divide the lines so that they are more equal (and maybe then we can hold auditions if necessary).

OR

2) A group of actors does a separate play. We have two plays with two different groups of actors.

Bring your scripts tomorrow. Pass the word along to your friends to look at this posting.

We’ll discuss this tomorrow at 5:00.
